Based around the books of Edgar Rice Burroughs, Yates created a believable story line that falls well into the Tarzan book series (1912-1995), the film falls in line roughly around book 4) and the movie/TV serials. Viewed in theater.ĭirector David Yates did not disappoint with his latest feature film, The Legend of Tarzan (2016). This film is a great many things, but a legend is not one of them. The Legend of Tarzan (David Yates, 2016): USA Phoned in performances, dodgy dialogue and derivative action sequences make up this lack lustre wannabe blockbuster. With any luck the franchise will begin and end with this mess of a film. I don’t know why.Ī totally unnecessary and incredibly dull attempt to launch a new Tarzan franchise. Jackson would be open to performing oral sex on a gorilla. Oh, and there is a painfully unfunny joke that is dragged out way too long about whether or not Samuel L. It’s a trick that works with comic book movies ( Batman V Superman is dark but brutal), but for some reason this film can’t pull it off and the whole thing feels gutless and lacking. This film is trying to give Tarzan the DC treatment and make it dark and serious, but at the same time trying to make it appropriate for everyone. Also, for a film that is set in the inhospitable world of the jungle a 12A certificate does it a massive disservice: Tarzan gets heavily beaten by a silverback gorilla and makes it out with a barely noticeable bruise. The action scenes are far too derivative of other superior action sequences, for example: do we really need to see a lone hero take down a whole train carriage of armed villains? Again? That trope should have vanished after it was used in The Raid 2, once you’ve seen a petit woman in shades beat a group of Yakuza to death with claw hammers, there is no train fight that will ever top it. She is the damsel of the piece who is pretty much useless and has to wait for Tarzan to rescue her.Ĭonsidering that this was sold as a darker version of Tarzan I feel making it a 12A was a poor decision, financially it makes sense because it will make the most amount of money, but it diminishes the quality of the film. There is a moment where Rom orders her to scream and she says “like a damsel?” in a snarky tone, which promises that she will be proactive and a character with agency and the ability to do things for herself. Margot Robbie stars as Jane, who is Tarzan’s wife and is relegated to the thing that Tarzan must reclaim after she is stolen by Rom. However, in a film as catastrophically awful as The Legend of Tarzan it just comes across as two high quality actors blatantly phoning it in and it’s simply annoying to watch. It’s fine for them to “play themselves” in Quentin Tarantino films, because he has the writing and directing skills mixed with a healthy dose of raw pinash to make it work. In other words, they’re both doing impressions of themselves, which is starting to get tiresome. Jackson plays a wise cracking gunslinger. There’s a point where he fights a gorilla and wins and somehow that encourages the apes to help him on his quest.Ĭhristoph Waltz plays the villainous Rom, a man who decided to go to Africa dressed like The Man from Del Monte, while Samuel L.

He just walks, swings, runs and jumps from tree to tree looking as bored as I was for no real reason. He doesn’t seem to care about his wife Jane considering that his only motivation to stop Rom is to rescue her. He switches regularly between bored expression to angry expression to mildly happy expression over and over for the entire film.

It’s not just dreadful in comparison to the Disney classic from 1999, but also in comparison to the utterly disposable but relatively fun animated Tarzan from 2013.Īlexander Skarsgard was great as Eric Northman in HBO’s True Blood, so I can only assume that since then a large boulder landed on his head and he forgot how to act. I once again find myself confronted with a film that decided to have a good go at making every aspect of it absolutely dreadful. Jane is captured by Rom and Clayton must become Tarzan once more to save her and stop Rom’s dastardly plans. Clayton returns and reconnects with many of his old friends both human and animal who recognise him as Tarzan. John Clayton of Greystoke is called back to The Congo under false pretences by Colonel Rom who intends to kill him so an African warlord will allow him to mine the Congo for diamonds.
